Maryville, Tenn. – The 25th annual Tour de Blount cycling race is scheduled to begin May 14, 2016 at 7:30 a.m. at Heritage High School in Maryville, Tenn. The Foothill Striders, along with the event’s presenting sponsor, the Blount Partnership, are joining forces to make the silver anniversary race one for the books.

The Foothill Striders are a non-profit group whose goal is to encourage a healthy lifestyle through hiking, biking and running. The Tour de Blount began 25 years ago by a small group of Striders members who wanted to promote cycling in Blount County.  Today the Tour de Blount continues to promote cycling, but also showcases the Peaceful Side of the Smokies in all its beauty; the race takes place on the rolling landscape  — and a few flat roads – in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The Tour consists of four routes of varying distances. The shortest route is an 18/25-mile option.  Riders limited on time, or perhaps those who prefer a flatter route, will enjoy this course on River Road. The course also provides the option to cross Highway 321 and climb a hillier, more challenging Dry Valley Gap loop.

The 40-mile route takes riders on a scenic tour through Rockford.  Many short climbs and fast descents await the riders, as well as rolling hills past picturesque farmland views.

The 63- and 72-mile courses cover many of the same roads, but the 72-mile route is unique in that it includes the infamous “Climb the Wall” challenge.  It is a steep climb many riders use as a measuring stick to gauge their strength and resolve year after year.

King and Queen of the Mountain jerseys will be awarded again this year to the first male and female rider to make it to the top. Last year, Matthew Hunt and Maysoun Geizer, both from Blount County, were the first to crest the top and hear the welcome sound of the event’s faithful bell-ringers.

There will be six aid stations to nourish and encourage the riders, staffed with groups vying to win the Best Support Station award.

The first 350 riders to register will receive a 25-year commemorative pint glass sponsored by Alewine Pottery. Each rider who completes any of the four routes will receive a unique water bottle recognizing the route sponsors: Woody’s Marathon, Provision Health and Performance, CirrusPath and Blount Discount Pharmacy.

The Tour is also aided by the staff of Cycology Bicycles, who provide emergency mechanic services on the courses, and the Blount County Emergency Communications Group.

After the riders finish, they will enjoy delicious lunch and birthday cake to celebrate the 25th birthday of Tour de Blount.

“We are excited to welcome cyclists from Blount County and beyond to this milestone event,” said Blount Partnership President and CEO Bryan Daniels. “It is always a treat to witness the passion and enthusiasm that has surrounded this event for the last 25 years, and we are excited to see that same excitement for many years to come.”

Registration is underway at www.bikereg.com, and on-site registration will be available the day of the Tour. To learn more about the Tour and to watch for updates, please visit the event’s Facebook page by searching for “Tour de Blount.”
