MARYVILLE, TN — A panel of officials representing multiple organizations in Blount County will talk about “Local Leisure Activities Available for Seniors.” Many of these activities will be low-cost or free.
The panel presentation will be on Wednesday, February 25, at 11 a.m. at the Blount County Public Library. The library partners with the Blount County Office on Aging to present the “Focus on Seniors” monthly programs from September through November and from January through April each year.
Along with the beauty of the Blount County region is a vast array of programs, classes and activities that are free or low-cost. A panel of organization representatives will provide ideas and descriptions of events and services available in the area.
Organizations and representatives who will participate in the panel will include:
Blount County Parks and Recreation & Everett Senior Center – Janet Thompson, Director of Everett Senior Center, will discuss the array of activities, classes, dances, events and social activities available at the Senior Center along with an overview of other Parks and Recreation events and activities.
Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center – Bob Patterson, Executive Director, will discuss the history, exhibits, events and volunteer opportunities at the GSMHC as well as other museums and local history organizations in Blount County.
East Tennessee Wanderers – J. David Bonewitz, President/Trailmaster, will describe the walks and qualifications for membership/participation in this organization.
Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont – John DiDiego, Education Director and with an MS in Natural Resources, will provide a description of the many camps, classes, research, resources and activities available at GSMIT, one of the treasures of the Smokies.
Blount Memorial Wellness Center – Rachel Scull, Group Aerobics Coordinator, teaches freestyle classes for seniors, some of which include classes for folks with joint replacement, arthritis or who need help strengthening daily functional movements.
Blount County Public Library – Joan VanSickle Sloan, Public Relations, will provide a description of programs, classes, events, services and resources available at the library and on the website.
While this program is designed especially for senior citizens, anyone is invited to attend because all of the organizations provide services for all ages.
Open to the public, the program is sponsored by the Blount County Public Library, located at 508 N. Cusick Street, Maryville, where services are an example of your tax dollars at work for you.
