In preparation for the separation of Alcoa into two companies in the second half of 2016, Alcoa Foundation structured the 2016 Dollars for Doers volunteer programs to maximize the opportunities for teams of Alcoa employees and U.S. retirees. To make it easier for employees to form teams and earn the maximum contribution for the local nonprofit of their choice, the size of teams was reduced from eight to four and an unlimited number of events was allowed to take place through June 30.
Alcoa employees took the challenge very seriously, dedicating more than 26,000 hours of service to community needs in 18 countries.
Here in East Tennessee, more than 430 Alcoa employees volunteered with 49 organizations and raised nearly $170,000 for area non-profit organizations. Organizations ranged from Boys and Girls Clubs of the Tennessee Valley to Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont to Experience Your Smokies to United Way of Blount County and so many more.
“Alcoa Tennessee Operations’ employees have never shied away from hard work. Whether here at the plant or volunteering in the community, our employees are always up for the challenge,” said Jeff Weida, Alcoa Tennessee Operations Plant Manager. “All of these volunteer projects were coordinated and led by employees who have a passion for their particular non-profit organization.”
In partnership with more than 1,000 non-profits, Alcoa employees and community members around the world collected and distributed food or clothes, planted trees, restored natural areas, helped children through education and recreation programs, served meals to the underserved and improved security.
