ALCOA, Tenn. – This summer, Alcoa Foundation will sponsor educators in Alcoa communities to participate in hands-on scientific research expeditions with EarthWatch Institute’s Teach Earth fellowship program. Eligible applicants and nominees must be primary or secondary school educators who are passionate about teaching and interested in learning more about environmental issues, as well as committed to engaging students and the community outside the classroom.

The summer’s week-long expeditions run seven to 14 days. Participants will collaborate with teachers from around the globe in one of three locations— Ecuadorian rainforest, the Chiricahua Mountains of Arizona or the Arctic’s edge in Canada. Alcoa Foundation pays for the program and all associated costs. The deadline to apply or nominate a teacher is February 20, 2015.

The purpose of the program is in part to add to the knowledge needed to build a sustainable future, while also providing teachers with a rich opportunity for personal development. The hands-on scientific field research expeditions have nurtured relationships between environmental and business organizations, as well as raised awareness and appreciation of the Earth’s ecosystems.

“We believe that providing educators with a chance to travel to a beautiful, natural environment and participate in hands-on, scientific research alongside the world’s top scientists is a win-win-win for the teachers, students and schools,” said Christy Newman, community relations manager for Alcoa Tennessee Operations. “This investment represents an investment in our entire community’s education.”
