The Peaceful Side of the Smokies enjoyed yet another record-breaking tourism year in 2015, according to tourism statistics released this week by the U.S. Travel Association. Blount County, Tennessee brought in more than $345 million in tourist expenditures last year, a 4.6 percent increase in tourist expenditures from its previous high in 2014. The year-to-year increase represents one of the largest upticks in the state, according to the Economic Impact of Travel on Tennessee Counties Report.
“We are delighted that travelers throughout the nation continue to recognize Blount County as a top tourism destination,” said Blount Partnership Director of Tourism Kim Mitchell, who leads the Smoky Mountain Tourism Development Association. “We believe our proximity to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, our wide array of activities and warm Southern culture will continue to attract guests.”
Blount County’s location – minutes from Knoxville in the foothills of the Smokies – has long made it a popular stop for visitors, from families to outdoor adventurers to businesses planning corporate retreats. Its diverse lodging accommodations include a five-star resort, convention spaces, bed-and-breakfasts and family-friendly hotels. For many, the county serves a peaceful, authentic escape from the bustle of America’s most visited national park.
Last year Blount County brought in $12 million in local taxes, fueling the area’s economic vitality. It ranked eighth among all Tennessee counties in total tourist expenditures.
“Tourism remains a vital cog in the wheel of Blount County’s economic growth,” said Blount Partnership Chief Executive Officer Bryan Daniels. “We are proud of what these figures mean for our local hospitality industry, our residents and our guests.”
