Maryville, Tenn. – More than a dozen local elected officials have signed up to participate in the second annual Calhoun’s Pigs & Politics Legislative Day to be be held Thursday, Aug. 8 from 4:30-7:30 p.m. at Alumni Gym on the Maryville College campus.
They will be joined by many more office holders as they mingle in a summer pig roast setting with the public and business community – no speeches, just a lot of Calhoun’s BBQ, beer provided by Smoky Mountain Brewery, the Jeff Jopling Band performing live and networking.
Elected officials will be serving BBQ while collecting “tips” for their respective non-profit organizations. Some are getting a pie tossed at their face, while other are participating in a dunking booth. Last year, more than $800 was raised for Blount County non-profits.
Serving for tips are Sen. Doug Overbey (Secret Safe Place), Register of Deeds Phyllis Crisp (Shop with a Cop), Blount County Mayor Ed Mitchell (Boys & Girls Club), Maryville Mayor Tom Taylor (BC Library Foundation), Rep. Art Swann (Haven House)
Getting dunked are Blount County Commissioner Gary Farmer (BC Education Foundation, BC Community Action), Blount County Commissioner Tab Burkhalter (New Hope CAC, Family Promise), Blount County Commissioner Richard Carver (Cystic Fibrosis), Rep. Bob Ramsey (BC Community Action)
Pie toss participants include Burkhalter and Mitchell.
“Last year’s event went over very well with Tennessee Commissioner of Tourist Development Commissioner Susan Whitaker attending,” said Bryan Daniels, Blount Partnership President/CEO. “Even though it’s not an election year, we still want to thank our elected officials for all they do. It’s a small thing, but these people work really hard at representing the people of Blount County.
“We added more activities and with Calhoun’s catering the entire event, everyone should leave full and exhausted.”
