This feature is a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member. So, here we go with our 184th installment visiting with Jon Wilson, territory sales manager for Handling Systems, which provides solutions to material handling and ergonomic challenges often seen in manufacturing environments.

Describe what Handling Systems does. Handling Systems is a Material Handling Equipment distributor for most of the major equipment manufacturers of Conveyors, Lift Tables, Work Station Cranes, Under hook Equipment, Pallet Racking and Bosch Rexroth Aluminum Extrusion and Bosch Plastic Chain and Palletized Assembly Conveyors.

How did you get started? I worked as a manufacturing engineer and also as a machine builder/integrator for 20+ years. Process, Material Flow, Ergonomics and Safety were always key factors that were sometimes difficult to find solutions for. With my experience in the manufacturing environment, I wanted to be able to help come up with and offer solutions with the right equipment to companies to overcome these common challenges.

What is your background? My background is in Manufacturing, primarily Automotive. Process flow, material handling, safety and ergonomics are the parameters all manufacturing processes had to work within. My experience helps me identify areas or processes where the right equipment could improve material flow, safety and ergonomics.

Who is your mentor? Dewayne (Mac) McKinney, former owner of Handling Systems. As a Manufacturing Engineer, I purchased equipment for my company’s production lines. Mac always helped me look at the Safety and Ergonomic aspect of a production line and helped spec the correct equipment for the application. I purchased from Handling Systems for many years before I came on board with them as a Sales Representative.

What are three things you wish you knew when you began? I wish a had known the most effective way to reach potential and new customers. Customer Service is most important to me. I was very surprised to find out not everybody works with a sense of urgency to take care of a customer. There is no such thing as a vacation or time off work when my first responsibility is to be available for a customer.

What do you enjoy most about your job? My success depends on me and my willingness to work. I am 100% commission paid and I love the challenge to be successful. It is very much like being self employed.
